Edit
Hi Akasha,
That's a very interesting observation. I'm interested in the effects of hormones, as you may be able to tell from my last post, although I am in the menapausal/HRT end of things.

About 2 weeks after your period your body starts secreting progesterone (the other female hormone) which increases forabout 1 week. Although you are still making estrogen, the effect of the progesterone tends to counteract the estrogen in some ways during that time.

Also, the impression I get is that with Dopamine, you have to get the balance right, and sometimes too much is as bad as too little, so maybe the "balance" has to be right with the hormones too.

I'm taking Estrogen daily and progesterone for 2 weeks out of the month. I was just noticing last night that all my really good periods seem to be during the half of the month when I'm on the Estrogen alone.

There's not much research being done that I can find on the effect of female hormones on the brain, but I did find a summary of a 1999 review about estrogen that says it interacts with the dopamine system.

My neurologist was intriqued when I told him I thought I might be improving on the estrogen, although he'd never heard of any reports of a connection.
