Edit
"However, after several years of doing this I realised I am not happy. I do not get fullfilment as I am not playing the music *I* want to play. I cannot play solo guitar properly, a huge chunk of repertoire is out of my reach and the (simple) material I do play is tough as my working fingers have to do so much work to cross strings that would normally be played by other fingers."

I feel the same thing when I try to play with my old technique, it's really frustrating.
I don't get the same kind of personal satisfaction I used to get when my fingers would run up and down the fretboard. It was not only a musical thing but also a feeling of acrobatic control. Today I try to enjoy being part of an ensemble, backing up other instrumentalists. It's not the same kind of fullfillment but it's something else and it is also good.
I completely understand your frustration and I wish you good luck with your retraining.

All the best/Johan Norberg
