Edit
Interesting post, thanks, I have heard of Werners book.

"He had me do an exercise where I would very slowly place my hands in playing position and then suddenly and rapidly play a problem pattern once and just once with detachment to the result."

Yes, this is fascinating. Almost like bypassing the FD circuit, yes? I stumbled on this too - I will occasionally play something like an arpeggio at higher speeds than my usual controlled exercises and just let the fingers do what they want 'without caring' about the sound/mistakes, crashing into the wrong strings, etc. Just kind of let them fall through the strings rather than trying to play them. Obviously the result isn't perfect musically, by my fingers have more freedom and control than I expected.

Definitely something to work with, this.
