One of the excercise I used for a very long time was to place one finger at a time very lightly on the key and then extremely slowly move the rest of the apparatus - the wrist, arm, elbow, upper arm - in a graceful movement, up and down, left and right, rotation, etc. This seemed to cover all possible aspects of playing. By doing this the brain re-registers what is a good relaxed relationship to the key. While I was doing it I could feel vital energy running up and down the patheway - from the shoulder all the way down to the finger tips. It was a neat feeling. When I was young and ambitious, I didn't practice scales much, when I was working on my recovery, I practiced scales (slowly) all the time. It was almost like a mantra for me. Although Bach is usually a bad choice for FD, I had a great time spent with the Art of Fugue and the Well-Tempered Clavier - at a snail pace that was. Bach's music has something healingful and comforting for me. After I mastered some basics I started to collect music that I could play at each stage of my recovery. I did chamber music whenever possible; also piano four hands. I even did a concert for two pianos. I felt at those times that whatever I was able to play... was a gift from God... a second chance, so to say. There was never a dull moment in bringing back old pieces one by one. My appreciation for the slow but steady recovery was paramount. It took me 13 years to recover, it was well worth it! My Carnegie Stearn/Perlman Hall concert on February 10th went really well, and two days ago I performed the Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra successfuly. I think I am playing better than before my FD....! I really want to cheer on everyone here at this forum. My heart goes to all of you because I have been there before. You will all make it! |
