"One of the harder things for me is to deal with the recovery vs the workarounds I have developed. I can play many things fairly well with modified technique so it takes great discipline for me to move back to a less efficient way of doing it. How did you deal with this yourself - did you make a conscious desicion to only play retraining exercises during this period?"My approach to this is to play with modified technique only in performance, and when I absolutely have to practice for that, but I try and keep things to an absolute minimum. Every day on the other hand, I devote around 45 minutes to proper retraining of my hand. I learn no new repertoire at the moment as obviously it would mean learning with the modified technique which for me is a waste of time in the long term.
Yes, I think it takes a huge amount of self discipline. You have to get your kicks another way - i sometimes play other music with a plectrum, for example.
I you can see and feel steady improvemnt though, it is a great boost. It has hekped me to keep a diary/log of what I am doing and charting my progress.
