Although I agree that playing reperoire is dangerous while retraining I believe it could also be useful if you do it wisely. After each practice session I deliberately play music (extremely slowly of course) BUT concentrating on the correct and relaxed way of plucking and not performing musically correctly whatever I play. This way my brain associates the instrument, music and playing with the feeling of ease. This to me is a very important step: that I not only intellectually but emotionally change my attitude towards my instrument. I also check myself if I truly feel the change or just believe that I feel it (two different things) - when my students play their basses I listen to how I feel. Do I feel relaxed when watching their plucking fingers or do I feel tense - basically do I want to see it or not? There are two master factors determinig our emotions: fear or desire. Being musicians we are all sensitive and are exposed to either so in my view it is definitely an issue.
