Edit
Hi Rob,

Great idea, couldn't agree more. I very rarely stutter (when tired or anxious - typically stressful situations) and there is defnitely a link. Sometimes I have to pause before saying a word because I have the feeling I can't say it - then I just cut loose and it's okay. Very similarly I have the same "I can't do that" feeling when approaching my bass but then I move my fingers very slowly and see with my own eyes that of course I can do it. This breaks down the psychological wall built of disbelief, fear and lack of self-confidence and then I realize how what I think (or rather believe) about myself manifests on a physical level.

To solve this puzzle I have created a "safety zone", a pieceful mental and psychological state where nothing counts; mistakes, failure, perfectionism and other disturbing factors are non-existent here. We all know how well we can play behind closed doors and how pieceful it feels when noone is there except us and music - that's what I call the "safety zone". Whenever I practice I am there; I just feel okay and happy and nothing matters. So when I feel anxious or uncomfortable while playing or rehearsing I don't search for the reasons why but I just remember how it feels to be in the safety zone and go for that feeling. Basically I imagine I am alone, by myself - and it works pretty well. Sometimes I am amazed how my musical potential unfolds not by practicing but by being able to stay in the zone.
