Edit
Even though I have made massive progress, I cannot emphasise the importance of slowly and gently warming up. The starting point is gently touching the strings, closing my eyes, feeling that connection and playing some very simple patterns.

I do around 30 mins of arpeggios and right hand exercises that gradually build in complexity, gradually build up the firmness of touch (and volume) and gradually build speed. Then I'll do some easy studies, and only then work on my current level of repertoire, so its nearly an hour every day before I get to my level. It's worth it, I tell you.

Some days I notice control is not quite so good, but I do not worry - the overall picture is gradual improvement with definite plateaux.
