Edit
Warmup is crucial, I totally agree. My experience is that if I start with music and don't worry about anything at all then my "system" so to speak (mind and body) finds it's way to normal easily and gets ready to work on the fd details. However if I "think technique" first I find myself immediately in the middle of uncertainty usually resulting in frustration and fd.

Actually you have to find the key to yourself and understand how your system works and adapt to that first - then gently push the limits while still monitoring yourself. The good side is I learn a lot about myself this way really. I spend less time on studying or improvising but gain more because I know how to work effectively. 10-15 years ago I used to practice 4-6 hours every day, now 2 times 1 is more than enough. With fd it is tricky however because I never know what tomorrow brings but you are absolutely right about having to see the whole picture not just the details.
