I’ve been completely free from the effects of Focal Dystonia for nearly two years. Have been working on and off as an accompanist and rehearsal pianist for a year without mishap. Among solo works tackled this year is the very difficult 'Triana' from Book 2. of 'Iberia' by Isaac Albéniz.
The FPL (flexor pollicis longus) muscle, which controls thumb flexion, afflicted playing to an appalling extent. After extensive CIMT to separate flexion/extension followed by equally extensive movement retraining and many months of progressive rendition, I now no longer even have any physical memory of FD. The condition has vanished as effectively as Banquo’s ghost at daybreak. As the original poster states, to promulgate FD as an incurable affliction is simply not true.
